The Linzer Schloss, or Linz Castle, is a medieval castle located in the city of Linz, Austria. The castle dates back to the 13th century when it is first mentioned in a document from 1282. It was built for King Ottokar II of Bohemia, as part of an effort to fortify the town. During the next centuries, Linz Castle was destroyed and rebuilt several times, mostly as a result of military conflicts. The Gothic castle underwent extensive renovations during the Baroque period, which was sponsored by the Archduke Maximilian III. During this period, the palace became the home of the Princely Court and the grand residence of Maximilian's nephews. In 1810, the Austrians seized the castle and in 1814, it became the barracks of the Austrian military. During this period, many of the castle's interior features were destroyed or removed. Between 1912 and 1934, the palace was converted into a museum dedicated to the history of Upper Austria. Since World War II, the castle has undergone more renovations and restorations, and is now a popular tourist attraction open to the public.
