History:

Michaelbeuern Abbey was founded as a Benedictine nunnery in 977 by Duke Leopold I.of Bavaria and his wife. It was initially located near the site of an old Roman villa. After being destroyed and rebuilt several times, the abbey eventually became a male monastery in 1617. During the Napoleonic Wars, the abbey was confiscated, and the precious medieval manuscripts housed there were dispersed. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Austria.
