Wiener Minoritenkirche In Austria: History,Facts, & Services
History:
The church was built in 1198 on the location of an earlier chapel and consecrated by the Franciscan friars in 1236. The main body of the church was built over a span of 100 years, with the Franciscans taking over around 1240. Some Gothic elements of the church were added later. In 1783, the Emperor Joseph II gave the building the status of a procathedral, making it the principal place of worship for the diocese of Vienna. Until 1839, the church served as the procathedral for the Archbishop of Vienna. Wiener Minoritenkirche This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Austria.

The church is constructed largely in brick and stone, with some parts of the nave, transept, and choir in brick and some parts in sandstone. The clerestory and the ribbed vaults above the transept are from the Gothic period. The walls are decorated with frescoes from the late Gothic period and the ceiling with paintings from the Baroque period. The main altar is one of the oldest surviving in Vienna, dating back to 1424. The church offers weekly Mass and is used for other religious ceremonies, such as baptisms and weddings. It also hosts concerts, lectures, and other cultural events and is open to visitors all year round.
