History:

Beethoven’s House, or rather Kaffeehaus zur Gondel, is located in the small village of Heiligenstadt, Austria. It was built by Ludwig van Beethoven’s brother Johann on the site of a former inn. The house itself is not the same one in which Beethoven wrote the Heiligenstadt Testament, but it consists of the newest incarnation of the Kaffeehaus zur Gondel, rebuilt twice since Johann's original building was constructed. In 1800, Beethoven wrote his Heiligenstadt Testament, not in this house but in a room at his brother's Schloss (palace). The famous document is an account of Beethoven’s emotional state and struggles with mental illness during his compositional years in Vienna. Heiligenstadt was the place where he visited to recover and find relief from this suffering, and the house is the closest remaining physical location to that time. In 1924 the house was acquired by the International Beethoven Society. The building, now known as Beethoven-Haus, or Beethoven House, contains the Beethoven Museum. It also contains many of the original furnishings of Beethoven’s brother’s time. The house and museum host over 20,000 visitors per year, who come to pay homage to Beethoven and learn more about the great composer’s life.
