Loretokapelle Barmherzigenkirche is a beautiful Catholic church located in Zurich, Switzerland. Located just off the Zurich University of Applied Sciences, the church is an important part of the Catholic faith in the region. Built in 1954 and well-known for its Modernist architecture, the church is a popular destination for those looking to see religious architecture. History The church was originally founded in 1954 by the Catholic Church to serve the students and faculty of the Zurich University of Applied Sciences. Prior to the church's construction, the area was occupied by various military buildings that had been erected in the 19th century. The church was designed by architect Richard Jost, who aimed to create a modern, simple structure which made use of clean lines and strong shapes. Facts The church is 50m long, spans three levels, and seats up to 350 people. The exterior of the building is comprised of white, ceramic tiling which gives the church an ethereal quality. The windows of the church are colored in bright shades of yellow and gold, representing the sunlight which streams into the church. The ceilings are adorned with striking wood carvings that feature angels and the Stations of the Cross. The church is home to a variety of artworks and religious artifacts. Among the numerous crafts, sculptures, and paintings is a life-size, bronze sculpture of Jesus Christ created by Swiss sculptor Josep Gaudet. Services The church offers various services and activities, including Mass, weddings, baptisms, and funerals. Additionally, the church is open for guided tours and special events.
