History:

The Osterreichisches Museum fur Angewandte Kunst (Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna) grew out of the collection of the imperial family of Austrian emperors. Established in 1864, the museum was originally housed in the Augustiner Castle in Vienna, and aimed to display the applied arts and crafts of the ruling Habsburgs. Over the years, its collections have grown in size and scope and encompass a great variety of materials, techniques, and objects from the 16th to 20th centuries. This includes a variety of decorative arts, furniture, ceramics, textiles, metalwork, industrial arts, glass, as well as musical instruments, medals, coins, and weapons. During the 19th and 20th centuries, the museum developed relationships with other institutions and opened satellite branches in St. Pölten, Graz and Murzzuschlag. In 1926, the museum was relocated from the Augustiner Castle to the newly built Hofburg palace in central Vienna. In 2007, the Museum of Applied Arts Vienna merged with the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien (Museum of Art History, Vienna), forming a new institution known as ‘Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien und Osterreichisches Museum fur Angewandte Kunst’. Today, this museum remains one of the most important exhibitions of the applied arts in Austria. Visit one of the famous monuments of Austria with your friends and family.
