The Salzburg Baroque Museum was opened in 1969, in the Franciscan Church of the Salzburg Cathedral. The museum is dedicated to preserving, collecting, researching, and presenting works of the Baroque artistic tradition, which developed and flourished in the city of Salzburg during the period from 1600 to 1800. During the Baroque period, many artists were commissioned by the Archbishop of Salzburg, one of the most powerful figures in Europe at that time, and many of their works can be found in the museum. The collection includes paintings, sculptures, and other artworks by renowned Baroque artists such as Franz Anton Maulbertsch, Daniel Gran, and Bartolomeo Altomonte. The Baroque period in Salzburg saw much public and private building works carried out, including the construction of the two fortresses of Festung Hohensalzburg (the "High Salzburg Fortress") and Festung Hohensalzburg Neue (the "New High Salzburg Fortress"). These fortresses are depicted in the museum as they appeared in the 18th century. Other main attractions at the Baroque Museum include the Baroque galleries, where visitors can observe works by sculptures such as Andrea Vaccari, Vicenzo Herrero, and Dominikus Zimmermann. There is also a room dedicated to 18th-century popular culture, featuring carousel figures, a puppet theatre, and a small collection of musical instruments. The museum includes an archive of maps, drawings, and newspapers which document the history of Baroque Salzburg. There are also many interactive displays, such as a virtual reality tour of the city centre as it would have looked in the Baroque era. The museum is staffed by knowledgeable guides and curators and offers regular educational activities, such as guided tours and workshops. The Salzburg Baroque Museum is a favorite destination for locals and tourists alike, providing a fascinating insight into one of Europe's most important artistic periods.
