History:

The Schloss Eggenberg is a large baroque palace located in the city of Graz, Austria. It was built in the early 17th century for the Eggenberg family, and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Construction of the Schloss Eggenberg began in 1625, when Hans Ulrich von Eggenberg (1568-1634), a prominent military and political figure in the Holy Roman Empire, purchased a large plot of land near Graz. After extensive remodeling of the land, construction of the palace began in 1625 and was completed in 1642. The architect commissioned for the project was Domenico dell’Allio, who had previously designed other prominent palaces in the area. The palace was designed in the baroque style, with a large central courtyard and four wings that extended outward from it. Inside, there was a great hall, gallery, library, guest and drawing rooms, and accommodation for twenty-four people. The interior was beautifully decorated with tapestries, paintings, sculptures and other works of art. Since its construction, the Schloss Eggenberg has been owned and occupied by the Eggenberg family, first as a residence and later as a museum. Many of its collections have been transferred to other museums in the area, such as the Neue Galerie and the Leopoldine Museum. In 2006, UNESCO added the palace to its list of World Heritage Sites, recognizing the palace as an example of baroque architecture.
