History:

The St. Stephen's Cathedral is known as the Stefanskirche in German. According to legend, the first church in the area was built in 1147 by Bishop Altmann of Passau in honour of the patron saint of Austria, St. Stephen. By the late 15th century, the cathedral had become a memorial to the Hapsburgs, the powerful and influential ruling family of Austria.
