The building has a long history, beginning as far back as the 18th century when the Imperial Diet, a law-making body created by the Austrian monarchy, first convened in the Hofburg Palace in 1748. The palace was used for several more years until it became apparent that it was no longer suitable for a parliamentary body. The first Parliament Building was constructed on the Ringstraße boulevard in 1874. The new building was given the name Reichsratsgebäude and was designed by the renowned architectural firm of Gottfried Semper and Karl von Hasenauer. The cornerstone was laid in 1874 and the building was completed in 1883. It had a Neo-Renaissance style façade and was decorated with white stone and marble. The main hall of the building was decorated with a gilded dome and elaborate frescos. In 1918, the Parliament Building became the home of the Austrian National Constituent Assembly which was tasked with drafting the Austrian Federal Constitution. The building was also the site of numerous historical debates and discussions on the subject of a new Austria.
