History:

The Vienna Museum of Contemporary Art (WMC) was established in the 1930s by artist Otto Breuer and art historian Dr. Alfred Posse. Its purpose was to collect and preserve the history of modern Austrian art. This is a goal which the WMC still holds today as it continues to expand its collections and exhibitions. The WMC first opened to the public in 1937, as a modern art gallery located in the Vienna City Palace. At that time, the museum concentrated on Austrian contemporary art, 1919-1937. The museum opened its doors to foreign artists such as Wassily Kandinsky and Max Ernst in the 1940s. In the 1950s, modern art from Europe was added to the museum’s collection. In 1959 the WMC opened a satellite location in the Albrechts Cemetery which was primarily used as a sculpture garden. Two years later, the museum opened the Kurfürstendamm Erker room, where it exhibited works by Austrian and international artists from 1960-1964. In 1968, the museum moved to its current location, the former Hotel Metropole. Here, the WMC was able to increase its exhibition space and add to its permanent collection. The WMC has continued to expand the scope of its collections and exhibitions. It today boasts a world-renowned collection of modern and contemporary art, including works by contemporary Austrian artists such as Maria Lassnig and Maria Scheibl. In 2010, the WMC opened the MUMOK (Museum for Modern Art, Vienna), which holds exhibitions of international modern and contemporary art. Throughout the years, the WMC has become a major tourist attraction in Vienna. One of its more renowned programs is the ART Vienna Museum of Contemporary Art exhibition series, which takes place every other year between May and August.
