History:

The Schloss Frohnburg, also known as the Hinterfrohnburg Castle, is a castle located in Salzburg, Austria. The castle, first built in the 12th century, began as a fortified cloister. It has since been owned by various aristocrats as well as both the Catholic and Protestant Churches. In 1174, the castle was first erected by Salzburg Archbishop Konrad I in order to protect his seminary and priestly cloister from outside forces. This makes the Schloss Frohnburg the oldest secular building in the city. The castle was inhabited by the prince-archbishop of Salzburg until the late 18th century. In 1690, Archbishop Johann Ernst quite the castle, and it was concomitantly abandoned. In 1805, it was sold to the Rothschild family who invested in the reconstruction of the castle, turning it into a fashionable residential building. In 1818, the Frohnburg became an academy for girls and housed as many as 400 students. In 1923, during negotiations with the Salzburg Association, the Frohnburg reverted back to the Catholic Church and six years later it was transformed into a youth hostel. Today, the Schloss Frohnburg is a tourist attraction and cultural landmark in Salzburg, offering tours and events throughout the year.
