Altkatholische Kirche is a form of Old Catholic Church that evolved from the German Catholic Church in the late 19th/early 20th century. The term "altkatholisch" literally means "old Catholic" and is often translated to English as "Old Catholic". The official English name of the church is the Old Catholic Church. Altkatholische Kirche has roots in a movement of clerics who rejected Pope Pius IX’s definition of papal infallibility in 1870. In 1873, representatives of several Old Catholic German-speaking provinces held the Conference of Bonn. This was an important moment in the history of the Old Catholic Church as it gave the movement a form of organization and solidified their beliefs. This conference established a “Declaration of Principles” and an ecumenical canonically sanctioned church body called the Union of Utrecht. This Union was later known as the Old Catholic Church.
