History:
The State Historical Museum in Russia is located in Moscow, and it was founded in 1872 on the occasion of the coronation of Tsar Alexander II. The museum began its life as the Imperial Museum of Military History, devoted to Russia's military history. The museum was initially housed in the Winter Palace in St Petersburg, before it was moved to an area known as the Kremlin. It was here that the museum expanded to cover a range of historic topics, and in 1883 a separate exhibition was opened devoted exclusively to Russian history. The museum underwent extensive renovations in 1924, when it was moved to its current location on the Red Square. This is a larger space, and allowed for the museum to increase its collections. Today, the museum is home to approximately four million items, ranging from ancient coins to manuscripts, archives and artifacts from various periods of Russian history. It also houses a library containing over 200,000 documents, making it one of the largest libraries in Russia.
