History:

The Smolensk State Museum-Reserve is one of the largest and oldest museums in Russia. The history of its foundation dates back to 1796, when the first museum opened in Smolensk. The museum was initiated by local academics with the goal of giving the city's citizens a chance to see paintings, sculptures, archaeological artifacts, and other objects from the region. In 1851, the Tsar Nicholas I bought the land and buildings for the museum from private owners. He declared the area a museum and cultural heritage site, and named it the State Museum of Smolensk. The museum's initial collections featured Byzantine coins, books about Smolensk history, and artifacts from the city's past. By the early 20th century, the museum had become an important center of Smolensk culture and history. In 1861, the museum was expanded to include a permanent exhibition and permanent collections of fine art, history, archeology, and natural science. During World War I, the collection was moved to Moscow for safekeeping and the building was nearly destroyed by bombs. Following the war, the building was partially destroyed and the collection was returned to Smolensk. In the 1950s, a new building was constructed and the museum was reorganized into three separate sections: history, archeology, and fine art. At the same time, an annex was built in which the museum keeps its significant art works. In 1974, the Smolensk State Museum-Reserve was established by the decree of the Council of Ministers of the RSFSR. In 1978, the museum was awarded the title of “State Museum-Reserve”, and a few years later the museum was given the right to bear the title of a State Museum-Reserve.
