The State Historical Museum in Moscow began construction in 1875 on the initiative of Tsar Alexander II. The completed structure opened in 1883, and was originally named the “Imperial Museum of Moscow Archeology and Ethnography.” Over the course of the 20th century, the State Historical Museum was transformed several times, beginning with its assignment as a “Palace of the Soviets” during the reign of Joseph Stalin in the 1930s. Its purpose became entertainment-oriented during this period, as it showcased propaganda proclaiming the Soviet Union’s superiority. The State Historical Museum regained its original purpose when Soviet rule came to an end in the early 1990s.
