It was originally the burial chapel of Russian Tsars and Grand Princes from the 14th through the 17th centuries. The building is now a museum dedicated to the history of Moscow. The Cathedral has undergone numerous renovations and change of ownership over the centuries. The Archangel Cathedral was built in the late 14th century by the boyar Feodor Koshilov in honour of Archangel Michael. The original building was destroyed by a fire during the reign of Ivan the Terrible and was then rebuilt in 1554 by the Tsar's favourite, Boris Godunov. The cathedral was the site of several important coronations of Russian rulers, including that of Tsar Ivan IV the Terrible in 1547. The cathedral also holds the burial crypt of Boris Godunov and the Romanovs, the ruling family of Russia from the 17th to early 20th centuries. In the 18th century, the cathedral was changed by the Empress Catherine the Great. She ordered the building to be renovated, adding a bell tower and refashioning the cathedral’s interiors.
