History:
Novosibirsk Zoo, the largest zoo in Russia, was founded in 1929 under the Soviet rule. Originally spanning 14 hectares (35 acres), the zoo has since grown to over 160 hectares (400 acres) and is home to a variety over 5,000 animals of 500 species, making it the largest natural park in the country. In the early years, the zoo was managed by the Government of the Soviet Union, and focused primarily on local animals that were native to the area. However, in the early 1990’s in the wake of the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the management of the zoo passed to private hands. This opened the door for the zoo to make great strides in the areas of animal conservation, research, and education. The zoo opened the first ever dinosaur park in Russia complete with robotic models and life-sized dinosaurs in 2009. This prompted yet another expansion and renovation of the zoo, and since then it has become one of the leading tourist sites in the country. The zoo is also home to several endangered species, such as the Amur leopard, Przewalski’s horse, and the Siberian Tiger, making it an essential place for wildlife research and conservation. Today, the Novosibirsk Zoo is known as an important symbol of the city of Novosibirsk, and is a beloved attraction for local residents and visiting tourists alike.
