History:
The Voronezh State Art Museum was founded in 1808, by the Voronezh Provincial Office of the Imperial Court, in what was then the Russian Empire. The museum was dedicated to the preservation and display of the cultural and historical legacy of the city of Voronezh. In 1841, the museum moved to a more spacious building located on Dvoretskaya Street, in the city center. It was during this period that the city started to become a hub of culture and the arts, and the museum was part of that development. Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, the museum was actively involved in keeping up with the latest in art exhibitions and exhibitions from other art centers. The museum also focused on pieces from Russia, especially the Karabakh region, as well as from the European continent. By 1917, the museum had acquired a sizable collection of European and Russian masters of painting and sculpture. In addition to its sizable permanent collection, the museum also began to host regular travelingexhibitions of foreign and national art. In 1923, the museum was renamed the Voronezh State Art Museum-Museum of Fine Arts, and began to focus on contemporary works of international and domestic art. During World War II, the museum was shattered as the Voronezh area changed hands between the Soviet and German forces. The museum underwent numerous repairs, yet managed to continue to serve its purpose of exhibiting culture and history. In 1967, the museum was re-named the Voronezh State Art Museum and was given the task of preserving the city’s cultural legacy. In 1997, the museum underwent renovation and was designated a federal institution. Currently, the museum houses a vast collection of pieces from European, Russian, and Asian art, including paintings, sculptures, decorative, objects, coins, and medals. It continues to curate special exhibitions, educational and cultural events, and engages in active research in the fields of art history and cultural heritage.
