The Temple of Ramesses III in Medinet Habu is an extensive funerary temple complex belonging to the New Kingdom Pharaoh Ramesses III (ruled 1186-1155 BC). It was built on the western bank of the Nile River in the ancient city of Thebes. Located on the outskirts of modern Luxor, the ruins of the temple are now managed as a major tourist attraction and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The complex was built along the same plan as the nearby Temple of Ramesses II, consisting of a temple at the centre of a large court surrounded by a massive mud-brick wall, exterior gateways, a sacred lake, chapels, and a diverse array of mud-brick structures. The temple is most famous for the intricate decoration of its walls, which include scenes from the Book of Gates and the Book of the Dead as well as depictions of Ramesses III's conquest of Libya and his sed-festival. The complex was constructed over a period of 12 years as part of a larger funerary program for Ramesses III. The main temple was built between 1186 and 1175 BC, and the construction of the complex was completed in 1155 BC.
