History:

The Pyramid of Sahure’s queen Meretnebty is located in the ancient necropolis of Abusir, Egypt. It dates from the 5th Dynasty of Pharaohs which was a period of great importance in the development of pyramid building. The pyramid is relatively small with a 28-meter square base and a height of 15 meters. It was originally open all the way up to the apex but is now mostly in ruins. The queen was one of the earliest known female members of the royal family and is believed to have been the wife of Pharaoh Sahure, a particularly renowned ruler from the 5th Dynasty. The pyramid was likely built during his reign and for many centuries it remained largely undisturbed and intact. In the early 20th century, the pyramid was excavated and studied by the French Archaeologist Jean-Philippe Lauer. He was able to identify some of the original colors used to decorate the surface and found a collection of pottery fragments. However, the inner chambers were completely blocked up and no other traces of funerary objects were found. Today, the pyramid is still an important part of the archaeological landscape at Abusir and stands as a reminder of the greatness of the early pyramid-building Pharaohs. The pyramid consists of six steps, and originally had two entrance doors, one facing east and the other west. 5. The burial chamber contained, among other things, a granite sarcophagus probably belonging to Meretnebty. 6. Unique for this period are the reliefs in her pyramid, which are among the earliest reliefs in an Egyptian pyramid and depict scenes of offerings and the royal family. 7. In 2013 an excavation team from the Czech Institute of Egyptology discovered a well-preserved underground tomb beneath the pyramid's base. 8. The tomb contained a wooden statue of Meretnebty, showing her dressed as a goddess, as well as two-thousand-year-old mummies.
