The Pyramid of Teti's queen Iput I is an ancient Egyptian structure located at Saqqara, a necropolis located southwest of Cairo. It was built during the 6th Dynasty of the Old Kingdom, in the 26th century BC. The pyramid was first discovered in 1894 and was the first royal pyramid ever discovered in Egypt. It was built for Queen Iput I, a wife of Teti, the 6th Dynasty ruler and founder of the Dynasty. The pyramid has an assumed base of 114 m (374 ft) square and a height of 43 m (140 ft). It is thought that the pyramid originally held a burial chamber which contained valuable items. The interior of the pyramid consists of a substructure or funerary complex which includes a vestibule, an antechamber, and a granite-floored burial chamber. The walls of the burial chamber have well-preserved reliefs including depictions of funeral scenes, anthropological scenes, ritual scenes, and daily life scenes. The pyramid was also found to contain several sarcophagi. The pyramid of Queen Iput I is a unique example of a royal pyramid and has been identified as a testament to her importance when she was alive. Though no other pyramids in Egypt have been found to have been built for any other wife of Teti, its existence indicates the prominence of Queen Iput I as an important female figure at the royal court during the 6th Dynasty.
