History:
The Sforzesco Castle, also known as the Castello Sforzesco, is a castle located in the Italian city of Milan. The castle was originally built as a Visconti fortress in the 14th century, before being redesigned and strengthened by the Sforza family in the 15th century. It served as the primary residence of the ruling Sforza family until the mid-16th century, when the family's rule over Milan was briefly challenged. The castle’s position as a defense against invaders earned it the nickname “the Fortress of Milan.” Through continuous development and renovations, the castle underwent several distinct phases in its history, each of which changed its overall shape and configuration. It has hosted multiple famous guests, including Lorenzo de’ Medici, Charles VIII of France, and the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. In 1535, the Sforza court was overthrown by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. In 1537, the intricate grounds of the castle were ordered to be destroyed to prevent Milan from serving as a base for future rebellions. But in 1550, the Spanish forces once again occupied Milan and began to repair and restore the castle. The Sforzesco Castle in its current form dates back to the mid-17th century when it became the residence for the Spanish governor of Milan, and a prison was added. During this time, some additions to the castle were made, including an astronomical clock, the sculpted figures of Cerberus on the front facade, and the addition of several defensive towers. In the 19th century, the castle served as a garrison for the Austrian forces in Milan. Today, the castle houses several museums and artworks, and is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. It is also one of the most visited sites in Milan. Visit one of the famous monuments of Italy with your friends and family.
