History:

The Tavrichesky Palace, a Neoclassical building in St. Petersburg, was built from 1783 to 1786 to be used as a summer residence for Count Grigory Grigoryevich Orlov, a favorite of Empress Catherine the Great. A unique feature of the palace was its elevated position on a raised foundation, five meters above ground, allowing for a grandiose view of the Neva River. The palace, designed by Giacomo Quarenghi, was the first largeness palace built in the Russian capital and was thought by many to be the most impressive building in St. Petersburg after the Winter Palace. The palace was noted for its open-air halls, which occupied almost the entire first floor of the building. While the palace was designed in the Classicism style on the exterior, much of its interior was inspired by styles of antiquity and featured detailed, ornamented carvings. The Tavrichesky Palace was originally used by the Orlov family, until it became the property of Count Nikolay Petrovich Woronzoff after he married Count Orlov's daughter. Count Woronzoff was a noted collector, and so the palace was filled with artwork from the 18th century. In 1877, the palace was sold to Grand Duke Constantine Romanov, and in 1906 it was seized by the State and given to the Ministry of the Interior. Today, the Tavrichesky Palace is once again a museum open to the public, housing the documents and photographs of the Russian Imperial Family, as well as several avant-garde works of art from the 20th century.
