By October 1942, the Russians had completely encircled Leningrad, causing a German siege of the city. Despite the deficit of food, medicines, and weapons, the population of Leningrad held out for 872 days, until finally, in January 1944, the Germans were completely driven out. In May 1945, the Soviet Union declared V-E Day, the day that the Nazi war machine, which had lasted for 6 years, was defeated. Two months later, on July 24th, the two sides signed the final surrender document. The shelling of the German Reichstag was the symbolic end to the war.
