The Cathedral of the Dormition in Vladimir (also known as Uspensky Cathedral or Dormition Cathedral) is the main religious building of the old Russian city of Vladimir and one of the greatest monuments of Russian medieval architecture. It was founded in 1158 by Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky and completed in 1160. The church was destroyed by an earthquake in 1185 and rebuilt, by Andrei Bogolyubsky’s son, from 1192 to 1198. The original structure of the church was not preserved; however, some unique features of the old structure, including the overall forms of the building, the rich decorations of the walls, the arcade along the narthex and the upper gallery (terem), remained. The cathedral was damaged several times over the centuries, including during the Time of Troubles in the early 17th century and during World War II. In 1945, the cathedral was returned to its original splendor after it was restored and restored with its medieval murals.
