History:

Arctic and Antarctic research in Russia dates back to the 1700s. In the 19th Century, Russia was strongly focused on Arctic and Antarctic exploration and research. Notable Arctic and Antarctic expeditions included Mikhail Lazarev's 1819-21 voyage around Antarctica and Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen's 1819-21 expedition to Antarctica. In the early 1900s, the Polar Commission was established to co-ordinate Arctic and Antarctic research in Russia. The Polar Commission was home to the first major Russian research institutions, the Arctic Institute and the Institute of Iceology. In 1966, these two research institutes merged to form the Northern Arctic and Antarctic Research Center, incorporating the collections of the Polar Commission’s Polar Institute. In 1978, the Arctic and Antarctic Museum was established as part of the Center. Located in St. Petersburg, the Museum includes a research library and a diverse collection of historical documents, artifacts, photographs, and maps related to Arctic and Antarctic exploration and research. Today, the Arctic and Antarctic Museum in Russia is recognized as one of the world’s leading research and educational centers for Arctic and Antarctic studies.
