Brief History:

The Zeyrek Mosque, also known as the Monastery of the Pantocrator, is a complex of Byzantine buildings located in the district of Fatih, Istanbul, Turkey. The complex consists of two churches and a monastery and was built in the 12th century by the Byzantine emperor Manuel I Komnenos. The mosque is one of the most important and well-preserved examples of Byzantine architecture in Istanbul and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The complex was originally built as a monastery dedicated to the Archangel Michael but was later altered to include a mosque. The mosque receives its name 'Zeyrek' from the former monastery. It is one of the most famous mosque in Turkey which you must visit.

Architecture:

The Zeyrek Mosque is a 12th century Byzantine-era mosque located in Istanbul, Turkey. It was originally a Byzantine monastery and is made up of two formerly separate churches: the Church of The Pantokrator and the Church of the Monastery of Christ Saviour. The two churches were joined together in the 15th century to create the mosque. The Mosque features a variety of architectural styles, such as decorated stone vaults, domes, and semi-circular arches. The outer structure of the mosque is made of brick, while the interior is made of stone and marble. The walls have been decorated with intricate tile patterns and frescoes, all of which are in a variety of Byzantine, Ottoman, and Turkish styles. The minaret of the mosque stands tall, and the prayer hall is surrounded by twelve muezzin balconies. The courtyard of the mosque is also surrounded by cloisters, and the interior walls feature a large prayer niche. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.

Visiting Hours:

The Zeyrek Mosque in Istanbul is open to visitors seven days a week. The visiting hours are between 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. best mosque in the world.
