Brief History:

Defterdar Mosque is located in the Uskudar area of Istanbul, Turkey. The name ‘Defterdar’ literally means ‘treasurer’ in Turkish and this mosque is named after a chief treasurer of the Ottoman Empire of the 16th century. It was built by the daughter of the treasurer, Hatice Sultan, as a memorial to her father. The mosque was constructed in the year 1592 and the five-domed building is now an iconic feature of the Uskudar skyline. The mosque is renowned for it’s distinctive architecture and beautiful interior decorations. The mosque is a popular destination for visitors to the city and many tourists flock there to view its unique beauty. It is one of the most famous mosque in Turkey which you must visit.

Architecture:

The Defterdar Mosque is one of the oldest functioning mosques in Istanbul, Turkey. Built in the 17th century by the Defterdar Mehmed Agha, it is located on the edge of the Istanbul Archaeological Park in the Eminönü district. The mosque is characterized by its elongated plan, its two minarets, and its shallow dome. The façade is composed of alternating sections of brickwork, with the main entrance featuring stone quoins. Inside, the mosque has a single large chamber with a single central dome flanked by two semi-domes. The prayer hall is surrounded by lemonwood and marble columns, and the walls are decorated with Iznik tiles. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
