: The Ulu Cami is one of the largest and best preserved Mosques in the city of Diyarbakir, in southeastern Turkey. It has been continually in use since its original construction in 1459. The mosque was built by the orders of the governor of Diyarbakir in 1459, and was expanded by Suleyman the Magnificent, ruler of the Ottoman Empire during the 16th century. Ulu Cami is one of the most important religious sites in the region and it is the focal point of the Diyarbakir’s skyline. The mosque is built of sandstone and has a two-storey rectangular courtyard with a square minaret on each corner. The massive interior houses about 200 holy books and has a domed ceiling with 22 separate gilded medallions. The mosque also features the tomb of Semsudin Aǧa and two mausoleums. The Ulu Cami (Grand Mosque) of Diyarbakır, Turkey, is a mosque with a long history. Built in 1202 under the rule of the Seljuk Sultanate, it was constructed with stone masonry combined with architectural elements taken from Ottoman, Byzantine, Armenian and Arab buildings of the time. It also has one of the finest examples of a Seljuk-style minaret in the whole of Anatolia. The walls of the mosque are decorated with ceramic tiles, featuring various intricate patterns and colors. There is a mihrab inside the building which faces Mecca. In addition to the main prayer space, there are six small prayer chambers within the walls of the mosque. The Ulu Cami is still in use today as a place of worship and a popular tourist site.
