Brief History:

The Al Saruj North West Mosque is a historical and religious site located in the North Wilayat of Oman’s Dhofar Governorate. This ancient mosque dates back to the 16th century and is home to some of the most impressive Arab architecture. It is also said to be the birthplace of the region’s Islamic teachings. This mosque was built on the upper part of a mountain located 217 kilometers from the city of Salalah and it was known to have been a resting place for Prophet Mohammed (PBUH). It is believed that this is the first mosque ever built by the locals of the area and was built by Sultan Habes bin Al-Jarad Al-Jahoom in the year of 1400 A.D. During its time, the mosque has survived numerous wars, earthquakes, and other natural disasters and is currently being renovated. Architecture:

The Al Saruj North West Mosque in Oman is set into the steep slope that overlooks the sea and is framed by rugged mountains. Its architecture follows the traditional style of many mosques in the region, with a large central domed prayer hall, four entrance portals, and large white-washed walls. The mosque is constructed from local limestone and its overall design follows the traditional rectangular plan. The walls are decorated with both geometric and floral patterns, and the ceilings are adorned with intricate designs thought to bring good luck. The large prayer hall is tiled in floral patterns and features an elaborately carved mihrab displaying Quranic verses. The main entrance is elaborately crafted while the other three entrances are simple and plain. At the base of the mosque, there is a small fountain, a symbol of peace and serenity. Al Saruj North West Mosque does not charge for admittance and is open to visitors 6 days a week, from 9:00am to 7:30pm. Fridays are different as the Mosque is closed in the morning, opening in the evening for prayer from 4:00pm to 8:45pm. best mosque in the world.
