Founded in 1855, the parish is a designated historical landmark and one of the earliest Catholic churches in the city. It was built in a Gothic Revival style from limestone mined from a quarry in nearby New Melle. The church was founded in 1855 and the first building was completed four years later. The cornerstone was laid by Archbishop Peter Richard Kenrick.
