Siva Temple , Kilayur(Kaliyapatti) In India: History,Facts, & Services
Overview:
The Siva temple at Kilayur is one of the prominent Siva temples in southern India and is a famous pilgrim center. This temple is believed to have been built by the Pandyan kings in the 7th century and was renovated later by the Nayak rulers. The temple stands majestically on a vast complex that has tall granite walls and three gopurams (gateways). This temple is beautifully adorned with sculptures of gods, goddesses and sages. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The inner sanctum or the garbagriha has exquisite carvings and sculptures of gods and goddesses from Hindu mythology and the floor of the sanctum is covered with intricately carved steps. One of the most attractive features of the temple is a Nataraja Murti (dancing Shiva), which is installed in the central shrine and is worshipped regularly by the devotees. The temple also has a tank called the Usthra Pushkarni, where devotees take a dip before entering the temple. You must visit one of these historical places in India on your India tour
