Brief History:
Shahi Masjid (the Royal Mosque of Bidar) is a 16th-century mosque located in the city of Bidar, Karnataka, India. It was built in 1519 A.D. by Kalyani Chalukya king, Ahmed Shah I. The mosque was established for the Muslims of the Bidar Sultanate, and is considered to be one of the finest examples of Islamic architecture in India. The mosque is built on the edge of a ravine with three soaring minarets, decorated with stucco work, patterned brick work and glazed tiles. The interiors are richly decorated with inscriptions from the Qur'an, and the exquisite handicrafts illustrate the craftsmanship of a bygone era. Shahi Masjid has been declared a protected monument by the Archaeological Survey of India. It is one of the most famous mosque in India which you must visit.
Architecture:
The Shahi Masjid of Bidar is an Indo-Islamic architectural marvel of the 16th Century. It was constructed at the command of Sultan Alauddin Bahmani to commemorate his victory over the ruler of Deccan Sultanate, Golconda Sultanate in 1425. The mosque was built by two Persian architects, ‘Abdul Khaleel and Malik Yakut who were responsible for incorporating the Persian arcades and the Badshahi ensign of the rulers as part of the mosque architecture. The mosque is built on a raised platform with a vast open courtyard and two minarets which are known collectively as the ‘Four Pillars.’ The entrance of the Mosque has striking arched doors which are decorated with intricate designs and inlaid with gold. It has a unique feature of a triple domed roof, one for each of the three mihrabs. The large courtyard is surrounded by a five arched façade and is decorated with glazed tiles and Quranic verses. A small wooden balcony with seven steps on each side can be seen hanging from the back wall. The mosque interiors are elaborately decorated with stucco, oil paintings, and intricate geometric designs in blue and white. The walls are lined with marble carvings, while the ceiling is decorated with paintings of flowers, birds, and geometric shapes. The main prayer hall has a magnificent marble pulpit which is built on a raised platform and is believed to be carved in a single night. Other parts of the mosque such as the ladies prayer hall, Sufi-Khanqahs, and the Mirza graveyard are also adorned with marble, paintings, and intricate carvings. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
