Kandariya Mahadeva Temple, also known as Kandariya Mahadeo Temple, is a famous Hindu temple located in Khajuraho village in central India's Madhya Pradesh state. It is part of the Khajuraho Group of Monuments, one of the World Heritage Sites of India. The temple is renowned for its intricate and impressive architecture, an epitome of the Chandelas style of structural design. Built around 1025-1050, the temple has been an epitome of Hindu dedication, pride, and spiritual achievement.
Kandariya Mahadeva Temple Prominent Features
One of the most marveled structures of Khajuraho, the Kandariya Mahadeva Temple is an epitome of the architectural grandeur of the Chandela dynasty. Featuring a number of unique style of ceiling designs, the temple is a 80 ft tall structure constructed on an elevated plinth. The entrance of the temple is adorned with two large elephants that are carved intricately in red sandstone. The walls of the temple are covered with statues of Hindu gods and goddesses, Hindu religious stories, ardhanarishvara sculptures and a variety of figures from nature.
Kandariya Mahadeva Temple History
Kandariya Mahadeva Temple is said to have been commissioned by King Ganda of the Chandelas dynasty, who reigned in the 11th century. It was built in dedication to Lord Shiva and is said to symbolise the divine dwelling of the lord. It is believed to have been one of the grandest temples of the site and an example of the remarkable Hindu art. However, the temple was damaged at some point and it was repaired in the 19th century by the then-ruler of the region, Maharaja Azim Khan.
