Brief History:

is situated in the heart of Old Malda Town. It is believed to have been built in the late 16th century by an Afsharid ruler Sultan Giasuddin Muhammad Khan. It is a very large mosque with a central building and four minarets decorated with colorful glazed tiles. The mosque is popularly known as 'Shahi Jama Masjid’ and is one of the main attractions of the city. It is a beautiful example of Islamic art and architecture in India. The Shahi Jama Masjid in Malda, India is a mosque built in 1586. It is one of the oldest mosques in the region. The mosque is built in the Mughal style of architecture, with the design of arched entranceways and ornate ceilings influenced by the Mughal period. The rectangular structure of the mosque features a central courtyard surrounded by four wings, with galleries of 60 arches on three sides. The main porch of the mosque is in the East, and is built of red stone and grey sandstone. The walls of the mosque are covered with ornate decoration, with the lotus motif being prominent throughout. The main courtyard of the mosque also features an octagonal pond that is surrounded by four minarets. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.

Shahi Jama Masjid in Malda is open to visitors from 8:00am to 7:00pm, seven days a week. Note that visitors are generally expected to dress modestly with no short or revealing clothes. The timings may change due to local events or festivals, due to the impact of Covid-19, and/or for religious holidays.
