Overview:
hesvara Temple is a Hindu temple located in the town of Gokarna in Karnataka, India. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva and contains two shrines— one to Shiva and one to his consort Parvati. Built in Chalukya style architecture, the main tower (shikhara) stands over seven feet high. Kaitabhesvara Temple This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The main shrine of the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, known here as Kaitabhesvara and his consort Parvati. The main shrine is surrounded by smaller shrines dedicated to various other Hindu gods and goddesses. The outer wall of the temple is carved with scenes from Ramayana, Mahabharata and other various stories of the Hindu epics. Interesting facts:
The temple has a unique architecture featuring two towers - the five-storeyed main tower Is called Kailasanadaratha, and the smaller one is called Chaturvarga like a ‘cluster of four miniature peaks’. The main shrine is believed to be built in the form of a conch shell to symbolize Shiva's love for the ocean.
