Overview:
Megalithic Stone Circles,Tiruvakkarai, is an important archaeological site located in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is also call “Grand Anicut”. It is located at the foot-hills of the western Ghats and is believed to be the longest megalithic site in India, stretching over an area of 14.5 km2. The site, which dates back to about 3,500 BC, contains number of megalithic circles,burials and other archaeological features. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The site is characterized by the presence of large number of megalithic circles, dolmens, burial-grounds and other megalithic remains. Many of the stone circles at the site are elliptical and rectangular in shape. These are characterized by the presence of boulders form rings, with each boulder having a hole drilled in it. The site also consists of many burial grounds, and within many of them, urn burials and large jar burials were found which suggests that this man had practiced cremation.
