Overview:
Pirvatanesvara Temple is located east of the city, in the very heart of Kanchipuram. This temple is maintained and administered by the Archaeological Survey of India. The temple complex is surrounded by a wall. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The temple has three shrines in the main complex. The main deity at the center is believed to be ‘Pirvatanesvara’, and is represented in the form of Shiva Linga. The other two shrines are dedicated to the Gods Vishnu and Nataraja, both in their standing forms. The walls of the temple also have various reliefs depicting various Hindu Gods and Goddesses. Interesting facts:
The temple is also given the name of ‘Kadalivaana Kovil’, which means ‘Temple of the Sea’ as it is believed that the temple was built on the shore of an old sea known as Kadalivaana. The Pirvatanesvara Temple is one of the few temples in the city that use western style of architecture.
