Brief History:
Dargah Sharif is a Sufi shrine of the saint, Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya, situated in Nizamuddin West, Delhi. The Dargah is visited by thousands of devotees each day. Built in the 14th century, it was constructed by Sheik Mu'in ud-Din Chisti, the founder of the Chisti order of Sufism, who is believed to have migrated from Persia. It is also said that the dargah was built in order to house the tomb of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya, who was a great Sufi saint of the Chisti order. The dargah has since become a place of pilgrimage for many Sufis, and is considered a sacred site of sanctity and reverence. Every Thursday, thousands of devotees gather here to take part in qawwali sessions and prayers. The tombs of several other historical figures, such as Amir Khusro, are also present inside the premises of the dargah. It is one of the most famous mosque in India which you must visit.
Architecture:
The Dargah Sharif of Nizamuddin, Delhi is an ancient Sufi memorial complex built mostly out of red sandstone and marble. The complex consists of two mausoleums, which are believed to be that of Sufi saint Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya and poet Amir Khusrau. The architectural features of this complex are a symbolic of the medieval Islamic architecture of the Delhi Sultanate. The main entrance to the shrine is through a pair of large Southern gates. The walls of the complex are around 2 metres high and have a pavilion on top. Other features of the complex are the three domes of the two mausoleums, the high arches, intricate marble designs, and the aesthetically placed grand chandeliers used for decoration. The main highlight is the Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya's mausoleum, which has been constructed through a hybrid of Indian and Islamic architecture. It has an inner chamber, which is composed of a series of double-storeyed benches, formed from red sandstone. On the top of the mausoleum dome is a square structure built from white marble, known as a Chhatri. The main prayer hall or courtyard is a magnificent thirty-two meter wide space with domes, intricately carved marble designs, bright lights, and an imposing viewing gallery for special occasions. The walls of the courtyard have tall Minarets decorated with architectural designs in stucco. The main attraction here is the tomb of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya, which is open to public visitation. The Dargah Sharif complex is a popular pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Muslims. Pilgrims can offer prayers and leave petitions at the grave of the Saint, as well as ask for his blessings. The lighted dome of the Dargah is known as the 'King of the Night' and is visible from a long distance, making it a prominent landmark in the city. Visiting Hours: Dargah Sharif is open from 6 AM till 11 PM. On special occasions, the shrine may remain open till 12 midnight. Yearly special occasions such as the Urs of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya (on 11th Rabiul Awwal, 5th month of the Islamic calendar) witnesses huge numbers of devotees and sightseers to the place. These devotees stay at the shrine literally for days in order to pay their homage and respect. Apart from the Urs, devotees throng the shrine on Fridays for the special Zuhar Namaz (Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya's Dargah), the solemn occasion of Meelad Shareef (on 12th Rabiul Awwal) and in the month of Ramadan. No entry fees are charged for the shrine. The doors of the shrine remain open throughout the year.
