.The Jama Masjid of Malappuram was built in the year of 1417 AD by Malik bin Dinar, an eminent scholar from Arabia who had come to Malappuram after completing his studies from Mecca and Madina. It is one of the oldest and largest mosques in South India. This two storied mosque is located on the top of Tirurangadi hill in Malappuram district. Sultan Fathima Beevi, the aunt of Tipu Sultan, also took a part in its construction. This mosque, with its mixed architectural features, represents the local as well as the Islamic style of architecture. It has a large prayer hall with a dome-capped roof, two minarets, eight large doorways and four side towers. It also has spacious courtyards and a spacious hall for congregation prayer. The walls of this mosque have inscription about Malik bin Dinar and Tipu Sultan. The mosque has several rooms which are used for displaying Quran and hadith books.
