Brief History:

Hazrat Khwaja Syed Muhiyuddin Abdul Qadir Shaheed (R.A), elder son of Khwaja Syed Muhammad Najeemuddin Abdur Razzaq (R.A) of Chishtiya Nizamia and nephew of Hazrat Khwaja Qutubuddin Bakhtiar Kaki (R.A), also popularly known as Khwaja Bande Nawaz (R.A), is one of the most famous Sufi saints of India. He was born in India on October 22, 1238 C.E. He came to Madurai, a town of Tamil Nadu from Iraq in the Thirteenth century and settled down. He is well known as Bande Nawaz, or ‘Guardian of the Country’. He was very popular for his faith-healing and thousands of devotees used to throng his dargah for getting cured from physical and mental ailments. Even to this day, his tombs in Madurai is a place of pilgrimage for many people from all religions. His dargah (tomb) now stands in the place where he lived and preached the love of Allah and is known as Khwaja Bande Nawaz Dargah. It is one of the most famous mosque in India which you must visit.

Architecture:

The Hazrat Khwaja Bande Nawaz Dargah is one of the most important and popular monuments in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India. Located near the Madurai City railway station, the dargah (shrine) dates back to the 16th century and is considered one of the oldest of its kind in south India. The main part of the dargah complex is the central shrine of the saint Hazrat Khwaja Bande Nawaz (1453-1572). This shrine is surrounded by 15 more smaller shrines dedicated to the saint and other Sufi saints. The architecture of this dargah is a blend of Saracenic, Hindu and Islamic architecture with a unique traditional style. The main entrance gate is made of carved stone and has three arches typical of the Islamic architecture. Inside the complex, there is a huge hall with a low ceiling and a single large opening in the front. This hall is called Jama Majid and is surrounded by a well-maintained garden. In the center of the garden, there is a large white marble tomb of Hazrat Khwaja Bande Nawaz. The tomb is decorated with calligraphy and intricate fountains and carvings, typical of Islamic architecture. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
