Overview:
The Fort of Raigad is a hill fort situated in the Sahyadri Mountain Ranges in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Built in 1674 by the great Maratha warrior Chattrapati Shivaji, this grand fort served as the capital of his Maratha Empire for over a decade. Located about 1400 m above the sea level, at a height of 2700 feet, the fort stands atop a conical peak in the Sahyadris. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The Staircase leading to the entrance of this imposing fort is around 1737 steps long. The fort is surrounded by deep moats and steeply high walls on all sides. The architectural style of the fort is a unique style defined by cobbled walls and bastions. A few monuments in the fort premises boast of fine architectural skills displayed by the Maratha warriors. The historic city of Raigad serves as one of the most renowned forts of the Maratha Empire, under the rule of the great warrior Shivaji. He declared the huge fortress of Raigad to be his new capital in 1674. The fort was known as the ‘Gibraltar of the East’ owing to its inaccessibility and robustness. Raigad was an important site during the Maratha Rebellion of 1875-1882, during which the British had to face defeat at the hands of the Marathas.
