The Bada Imambara of Murshidabad, also known as the Asfi Imambara, is an imposing structure located in West Bengal. Built in the 19th century, by the then Nawab of Bengal Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, the Imambara features elaborate and intricate architecture that combines Persian, Mughal and Rajasthani architectural styles. The vast structure consists of a central dome, two minarets, a prayer hall, courtyards, four large gateways, and a labyrinth. The central dome is supported by four large pillars and is inscribed with Islamic geometric patterns. Hanging lanterns and chandeliers inside the Imambara add to its grandeur. The prayer hall has intricate murals in blue, yellow, green and red colors, while the corridor is made of finely polished marble. While the courtyards are adorned with beautiful geometric designs, the four gateways have various Islamic inscriptions. The labyrinth, a unique feature of the Imambara, is said to have over 900 rooms and 489 doors. It is said that only a single entrance into the labyrinth can be found, and it is believed to have been built to create an atmosphere of confusion and awe.
