and Location Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary is the Bhutan's second largest Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the Trashigang region of Eastern Bhutan. KMs, ranging from dense evergreen and mixed deciduous forests to alpine meadows. 1. The Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary (SWS) is located in the eastern district of Trashigang in Bhutan. 2. The SWS was established in December 2019 to protect the rich biological diversity found in the region along with the unique culture of the Brokpa Community. 3. An area of more than 650 km2 has been gazetted under the SWS area. 4. The sanctuary provides habitat to 62 species of mammals, 208 species of birds, 40 species of reptiles, 2 species of amphibians and numerous medicinal and other plants. 5. Worship Method:

The Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary (SWS) is located in the eastern part of Bhutan.Local communities venerate their local deities known as local mountain Gods (Lhakhangs) throughout the SWS and the mantras from local lamas during the festival of Kharchhu Drubchen. This is usually held for two to three days in each village. There is also a religious ceremony or ‘Tsogsham’ performed by the monks from the nearby monasteries in the region to seek blessings from the Gods after harvesting or before any undertaking of important events in the area. This event consists of occasional animal sacrifices and sharing of food and drinks by the devotees. The local people also hold their harvest festival called ‘Lhabsanendwue’ which is intended to mark the successful harvest of a particular crop. Animal sacrifices, and offerings to the gods and spirits are made during this time to seek divine guidance and protection. The locals also organize a festival known as ‘Michong Kharchhu’, whereby wild animals are hunted and sacrificed during this event to worship the local deities. On the other hand, prayers and offerings are made to the local deities on special occasions such as birthdays, funerals and typical Bhutanese festivals like Losar (beginning of the Tibetan New Year). How to reach:

Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary is located in eastern Bhutan near the Tibet border. It is reachable by road from Trashigang. From Trashigang, drive around 9 km northeast towards Sakteng.
