Brief History:
Al Dair Mosque is one of the oldest and most important mosques in Bahrain. It was built in the early 15th century and is named after the nearby village of Al Dair. The mosque has been restored multiple times, with the most recent renovations taking place in 2011. Its grounds feature a ceramic tile panel, which represents one of the oldest works of its kind in Bahrain. The building has two minarets and a large courtyard with a shallow pool. It also includes an events hall and library. It is the site of a weekly Quran study session every Sunday. Architecture:
Al Dair Mosque is located in the Northern Governorate of Bahrain and is one of the oldest mosques in the country. The mosque was redesigned in the 17th century with a traditional, central-plan architecture unique to the region. The mosque has three floors comprising the prayer hall, mihrab, and minbar. The ornate patterns and traditional Islamic elements of the building make it one of the most beautiful mosques in Bahrain. The mosque is built in the Sha’bi style, with six circular columns in the middle of the prayer hall that support the main dome, and four windows on the east, west, north, and south side of the building. Smaller domes surrounding the main one provide additional light. A qibla wall and mihrab face the Ka’aba in Mecca, and ornately decorated ornamentation can be found across the walls. The mosque also has a tall minaret in the center of the building, giving it a distinct shape. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
Visiting Hours:
Al Dair Mosque is located in the Seef District of Bahrain and is open for visitors from 6:00am to 11:00pm every day of the week. Non-Muslims are allowed to visit the mosque, but they must be appropriately dressed and modestly, with women wearing a hijab or scarf covering their hair.
