It is one of the few surviving examples of the 16th-century Azerbaijani architecture and was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1998. The mosque is considered to be “a masterpiece of architecture of Caucasus”. The shrine contains a dome, two minarets, a spacious prayer hall, aikhana (small house outside the walls of the mosque), hujre (cell reserved for a founder), and other structures. The impressive decoration is mainly of Azerbaijani geometric ornaments compositiona and a few inscriptions in Arabic, like “In the Name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful’.
