Baku City Circuit, Baku in Azerbaijan is a motorsport racing circuit located in Aghjabadi district, in the capital of Azerbaijan, Baku. The circuit is a 6 km street circuit and is the main venue for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, which is part of the Formula One World Championship. The circuit has hosted the first ever Formula One Grand Prix in Azerbaijan on the 19th of June 2016, and is owned by Baku City Circuit Operations Company Limited, a subsidiary of Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR. As well as the Formula One race, the circuit has hosted a number of other international motorsport events, including rounds of the FIA World Touring Car Championship, GP2 Series, and FIA Formula E Championship. History:

The Baku City Circuit is a motor racing circuit located in Azerbaijan’s capital city of Baku. The circuit was designed by British architect Hermann Tilke and is recognized not only as the home of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix but also the European Grand Prix. It is a permanent street circuit that is the biggest urban circuit in the world, capable of accommodating up to 200,000 spectators. The idea of building a motor racing circuit in Baku was initiated by Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev in 2010 and finalized in 2014. The construction of the circuit began in 2015, and included the addition of a four kilometer street course as well as an extension of the existing Baku International Airport Runway. It was completed in 2016 at the estimated cost of US$250 million. The initial race was held in April 2016 and was the first Formula 1 race in Azerbaijan and the fifth race to be held in the newly inaugurated Formula 1 season. In addition to the Formula 1 event, the Baku City Circuit has also hosted numerous FIA World Endurance championship, Blancpain GT Series and European Le Mans Series events over the past few years. The circuit is also home to the Formula 2 Baku City Challenge and the much anticipated Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The Baku circuit has recently become the new home of the Formula 1, hosting the Azerbaijan Grand Prix since 2017. The event is held every summer on the second weekend of June, with 2018 marking the third year of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix at the Baku City Circuit.
