History:

Salzburg Residenz (German: Fürsterzbischöfliches Residenzzschloss) is a late Renaissance palace located in the Altstadt (Old Town) area of Salzburg, Austria. The palace was constructed by Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich Raitenau and was used as a residence for him and his successors until 1803. It was then used to house the Salzburg state administration until the early 20th century. Today the palace is a popular tourist attraction and hosts many events and functions, including concerts and theatrical performances. The construction of the palace began in 1598 and took place in two phases. The first phase was completed in 1609 and then the second was completed in 1619. In 1611 the palace chapel was added and in 1693 the surrounding gardens were redesigned. The palace underwent further renovation and additions between 1730 and 1752. The main building was refurbished between 1815 and 1818 and then again between 1904 and 1906. Throughout its history, the Salzburg Residenz has been the scene of notable events. For example, in 1777 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s opera Idomeneo was performed here. It has also served as the setting for several films, including The Sound of Music (1965) and the Caligula (1979).
