The Dunluce Castle is a fortress located in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. The first castle built on the site, by a Norseman named MacSorely, was erected in the 13th century. The castle was then expanded by the MacDonnells, an influential clan during the Scottish Plantation of Ulster, starting in 1608. They used the castle as their stronghold in the region. The castle was heavily fortified and defended against attacks by the English and Scottish armies in the 16th century. During this period, it was also used as a prison and fortress by the Scots in the area for a number of years. In the course of the 17th century Dunluce Castle was attacked several times by the English army, withstanding the sieges in 1642 and 1689. In the latter clash, the Earl of Antrim's forces managed to defeat the English and regain control of the stronghold. In the 18th century the castle became increasingly less important and by the 19th century, it was abandoned completely. In the 1920s the castle was acquired by a group of antique dealers, who renovated certain sections of the castle before reselling it. In April 1951, a section of the castle collapsed and plunged into the sea during a violent storm, leading to its being declared a Dangerous Structure. However, a few years later, the castle was acquired by the state and in 1979 declared a State Care Historic Monument. Since then, the site has undergone a major renovation and its museum and visitor center opened in 2015.
